Tamariki and Trauma – Big Ts and Little Ts

Our little people need sensitive care-giving when they go through difficult stuff.  Sometimes we think of trauma as only the big stuff.  In psychology, we call these ‘Big T’ events.  Big Trauma.  A car accident.  Death of a parent.  Serious medical events.

But sometimes the ‘Little Ts’ are just as important.  Little Trauma.  Little Ts are inevitable in life.   Common childhood experiences at sensitive times in our development can be easily misinterpreted and taken personally by our tamariki. They’re gonna find me out! The curious case of the Impostor phenomenon

Did you know about 70% of people will experience the impostor phenomenon (fear of failure, fear of success, a sometimes obsessive perfectionist drive, and an inability to accept praise and achievement, combined with a genuine belief that you, the ‘impostor’, will be found out for being a fake).  To put it simply, it is the experience of feeling like a phony or a fraud.  It is particularly prevalent among high achieving women.

Common thoughts and feelings include:

  • I must not fail
  • I feel like a fake
  • My success was pure luck
  • I don’t deserve to be in this job

Living well with Type 2 Diabetes

There are over quarter of a million people in Aotearoa diagnosed with diabetes (mostly type 2 diabetes) and perhaps another 100,000 with diabetes who don’t know it yet (Ministry of Health, NZ).  Diabetes is about 3 x more prevalent in Maaori and Pasifika people and is also strong in South Asian populations.

Ever thought about suicide?

Thinking about suicide is a common thing to do.  It can be very hard to talk about emotional feelings but it’s really important to talk about this with someone.  Whatever is going on for you that has led to how you’re feeling right now is unique to you – but having suicidal thoughts is not. Binge Viewing and Sleep

Being a Netflix subscriber, this study made for a fascinating insight into the lives of 18-25 year old binge viewers.  A study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine this year showed that the more nights a week you binge viewed (defined as watching multiple episodes of the same series in one viewing), the more nights a week you will have associated difficulty sleeping.  80% of this age group reported binge viewing.  read more »
